Strippers

Sorry guys, strippers that remove powder coating not empty the wallet!

I am looking for a water based stripper for removing powder coating. I am not into using methylene chloride, hydrofluoric acid, phenol or benzyl alcohol based strippers.

I have been looking at 2 products that may fit the bill.

the only problem I see with this is it may cause pitting in some alloys which means more prep work.

This might be more suitable but i am unsure how it is applied as it wasn't under immersion strippers.

Any advice or recommendations is much appreciated as i believe it is a bit of a minefield with lifespan of some of the water based strippers. They have some great products stateside, water based strippers with better lifespan than methylene chloride based strippers and just as effective but sadly they don't have any European distributors.

That's just not funny. Had such high expectations when clicking on this thread.

In my experience, citric based stuff, (I'm guessing from the company name?), does naff all with properly bonded paint, especially stuff like powder coat.

A customer of mine uses an acid based powder coat stripper and it works great. I'm sure if a water based one was as good he would use that because of the health and safety implications.

Glass beads won't even scratch powder coating.

Really, well I sit corrected. I was sure a guy round here did them with glass bead. Must just be one of his blasting media he uses for other things.

More likely glass grit - that will shift poor quality powder coating.

I use glass bead for cleaning and finishing parts not to be coated. Glass bead doesn't leave a suitable profile for coating. You need some serious cfm to blast powder coating. I use aluminium oxide opposed to glass grit, works out cheaper. With glass grit being a one hit affair that is a lot of media that needs disposing of.

I too have been looking for a suitable 'stripper' for my headlights and was considering the '520' product. From the small amount of reviews that I have read it does seem to work, however quite slowly.

I use glass grit over and over and at 10 per kilo (by the tonne) including VAT and delivery it's cheap enough. It eventually ends up as a very fine powder which is brilliant for cleaning ally prior to bead blasting - cuts down on the use of beads.
