strimmer nylon?

Just started an old ryobi strimmer that was left<dumped in my shed> by a mate years ago.
I stuck the strimmer end in it and went to attack the edge of the lawn/hedge/shed/garage, places the mower doesn't cut. The strimmer seems to do the business, but I only did a little bit and the nylon finished.

I am just about to buy a roll of nylon and wondered if all nylons are equal?

Nope i bought some ryobi branded nylon it was crap kept snapping every two minutes

Just get a big roll of it and wind it on when you need it. The Nylon does go brittle over time, replacing it will sort the issue out.

Square stuff seems to last longer than round. The square Stihl stuff is really good

When I was green-keeping I bought a roll of triangular stuff off eBay and recall it as being very good. Don't ask for a Brand/price or link to it as it's so long ago.

Before anyone asks why I didn't use the blade for the brambles/ rushes etc, there were loads of stones (and even discarded bottles) in the areas I was cutting back.

Stihl recommend soaking in water for at least an hour before use, I always assumed nylon was waterproof bit it appears I’m wrong.

Yes my local dealer told me this made a huge difference

I think that all polymers are permeable (an absorb water) to some extent, hence the use of plastics with a film of aluminium to minimise ingress. That said, I'd never heard of the water-soaking idea before this thread and cannot think why it should work... but I'll try it.

nah nylon is really hydroscopic, it absorbs moisture really fast.

Been pleased with this and it has to work hard slashing through all sorts of stuff, reasonably priced from our local tractor place, might be a bit heavy for your machine though

As has been said, soaking the line in water before use significantly increases its life. Just don't leave it in water too long ie for months!

I used to keep a few precut lengths of line in a tub of water ready for use. Last week I used the strimmer for the first time since last year & the line in it kept breaking. I fitted a new length from my tub & it was breaking too! Got the job finished & once I got home I compared the soaked line to the fresh stuff on the reel of line. Instead of being softer & more supple the soaked line had ended up being harder & stiffer which must be due to being soaked too long!

As for brands of line - Oregon Duoline is very good. Can't remember what I'm currently using but it came highly recommended & probably the best I've ever used.

I went to screwfix and bought a small roll of their finest nylon.
I am just about to go and do the 30 loving tug starting routine, hopefully I get more than a few feet on this lovely orange nylon.
