Once a year around now we have our window cleaner Peter do the roof line plastiss and clean the solar panels with deionized water .
This year because its been aking hot for so long he gave them a quick spray with a weak solution of water & sodium hypochlorite bleach to break down the air borne solidified grease , muck & unburnt engine fuel oil fumes etc. We live on a big long hill & most trucks belch out a fair few oily fumes on the way up , as well using the bleach as to kill off any green algae on the glass & metal work ( they look like new now it's been done and we've had an hours worth of light drizzle on every thing to fully neutralize the bleach ) .
He had just got started doinght panels first when he called me in a panic. " Dave I've just had a strong tingling electric shock as soon as I turned the spray on brush lance "
Puzzled I checked the FIT meter and we were pushing 700 watts into the grid . No earth leakage tripped breakers etc.
Turned off the mains isolator as well as the isolator to the inverter ,box . Gave him a pair of thick rubber gloves & got him to lay his pole on the aluminium frame of a panel , then used my meter to check for voltage between his water container contents & the steel gate post using the 200 volt range on AC result 0,2 volts AC .. that to me would be a normal difference reading and nothing he should feel .
Rubber glove handed he did the rest of the panels & roof line stuff as well as giving it a clean deionized water rinse with no further problem
I've sat and puzzled over it , after he finished & left I switched everything on again and am pushing 684 watts into the grid in very slight slight drizzle , heavy humidity ..... outside temp just above 25 oC .
Could it be that he has just experienced what Faraday discovered ? When in a storm he experimented & found flying a kite with an iron key attached to the string within his hands reach ..........when the kite was a hundred feet or so in the air he touched the key and got a savage electric shock .
Peter was using his 8 mrt fully extended carbon fibre pole with the water running up the inside in an 8 mm reinforced tube to the jets that sprayed water on the brush head . Is this likely to be the same danger presented to sea anglers deciding to fish on the beach in thundery weather using their long carbon fibre poles rods ?
