Hya guys I was welding today 3.2 rods 140 ams low hydrogen 7018 rods half way througha cap and it shut off checked fuses electricuted my self and it still does not work its rated to 175 amps any Ideals would be very welcome

How did you manage to electrocute yourself testing a fuse?

Does the socket still work? Try something else with it, a drill or a lamp.

Is the plug in good condition? Welders give 13A plugs a hard time.

Fuse or breaker tripped in the consumer unit?

Does the welder work with a different socket?

It might have been the welder overheating and shutting down, although in that case, the fan should keep going.

Have you tested the 13A fuse say with a torch and bit of wire, or meter?

Have you tried replacing it with a known good one either new from the packet or from a working appliance?

If it's nothing like a damaged cable or blown fuse, I'd be looking to see if there's any warranty left and making a claim if possible.

How can you get a shock from the mains plug fuse with the cover on?
Change the fuse look for input cable damage with machine switch off.
If you don,t have a multitester and the knowledge to use it, get a electrician to have a look "electicity kills quicker than that".

If you managed to get a shock between fuse and earth I suggest you look at RCD protection for the circuit supplying the welder?

This true its going to be investigated I just wanted to weld badly I enjoy it it keeps me calm thats why I migged just to weld it is a shame I thought I could run at 140 on a 170 amp welder

Most of us don't want to weld badly, it's just the way it turns out.

You should be able to run at 140A with a 170A welder, come to that 170A.

If it overheats the thermal trip should go, the light come on and it should sit there with the fan going until it cools down and the trip resets.

Now, I don't think it's a great idea to push an inverter til the trip goes, with no thought for its duty cycle, but that's what should happen.

If you are welding at 140A with an inverter off a 13A plug and it stops, the most likely thing is that the 13A fuse has gone. Sometimes they can blow if you are welding at 80A, because you've previously given them so punishment at 120A plus that they've had it.

If you've changed the fuse and checked the plug, the socket and the cable, it sounds like the welder has an internal fault. If it's still under warranty, make a claim.

Presumably the local dealer will check the power cable and plug to make sure they're not going to have to do the work all to be told it's the fuse. They might do a bit more checking, like the switch in the welder.

With the greatest of respect to David, I'm not sure we can comment on what may be the problem when your knowledge of things electric seem a little, err, sketchy at best.

I'm not looking to insult you but if you've survived one shock then that's normally a sign to stop and get someone else to look at it. If you really did get a shock touching "the fuse and earth" then I suspect the fuse is actually ok (given that the fused end of live is nearest the earth terminal).

But I'd really recommend you get an electrician (or someone with a weeeeee bit more knowledge of electrics) to give it a once-over.
I'm glad that welding keeps you calm - getting electrocuted is likely to have the opposite effect
