stonechip? sill protection

the last few weeks i have been getting rid of the rust from my punto. nearly got it all sorted now apart from the sill, door shuts or kick pannels (what ever you wish to call them). the paint has started to bubble in places, like there is rust under the paint, no signs of rust, have scratched the bubbles away and can only see a dark grey coating.

waiting to sort this problem before it gets worse. im on a budjet so not waitng to paint to same colour as car. i dont mind it just being black as its only going to be see when the door is open. im also going to get some chrome protectors which is going to cover alot of it up.

is stonechip suitible for this application? does it dry hard like paint? i was going to do it wioth some left over 3m undersealer which i have used on the lower sills and all the arches but its to soft and you can mark it with just your finger nail. if stonestip is no good what else is more suited?

also i have waxoyled the lower part of the car, i used 2.5 litre for the floor pan and the insides of the rails but i was unable to get all the tight areas, i did the job on the floor. going to get it to work and go over it again, a light coat over the floor, thick in all the small areas i missed and alot in the rails again, how much should i get, 1 or 2l? on a really tight budjet, dont want to buy excess if i wont use it

first thing , scrape that grey coating back until you find shiney bare steel or the rust problem , no point in going that far and then leaving the problem there

overpaintable stonechip dries to a hard rubbery finish , just make sure it says over paintable on the can , and use a etch/zinc/epoxy primer on the bare steel

waxoyl...surley your the best one to judge what you need , you can thin it a little with white spirit to make it go further , although im no big of it on old cars as it just covers rust and does nothing to slow it like they claim , good on new stuff but not already rusty

If the stonechip drys to a rubbery finish I think I would be better of using the 3m underseal I used to do my arches as I have a litre left, this dries to a rubbering finish and saves me some money. Will put the chrome plates over this and just be more careful getting in and out of the car. Would be better to just paint to same colour of the car but I can't paint to save my life and don't have the money for a bodyshop job. The finish I get with the schutz gun is good and I don't really mind it being black, only seen getting in and out of the car

overpaintable is the right stuff for the job , by rubbery i mean you could dig your nail in it

underseal will have bits of grass stuck to it and will come off on clothes etc

it sounds exacally the same stuff i used on my lower sills and arches. its a textured black finish, drys hard and nothing sticks to it but slightly soft, rubbery and you can mark it with your nail. have a litre left, its the same in the link belllow

its marked as not over paintable, didnt want to paint over it anyway but im guessing this is more to do with how the paint reacts to it?

well yeah as long as it dries thats fine ...some stuff stays like tar and all the grit and rubbish sticks in it ..horrible stuff

if you painted over the soft stuff then the paint would crack , but no probs if you want to leave it black

underbody sealant (Schutz) is what it says underbody for it to be effective it needs to be on top of paint, if you use it on bare metal eventually it will rust.
you would be far better of with black stonechip clean out the gun and use just the same.
if you use the stuff you have and brush against it with your clother it will mark them not to mention not very long before it starts to look bad and will de-value the car

another budget option would be some diy store black metal paint brushed on ...wilkinsons or wickes do some ok ones
