'stick out' on welding gun.

hello all,

been looking on the net of late and have come accross this term on a few sites 'stick out'.
i think it refers to having the tip out past the shroud of the gun. is this common? the sites where i have found it all seem to say that it improves your welding. is this true?

I may be completely wrong but I was under the impression it was the amount of wire sticking out

i may have the wrong name for it, however what they were saying was to have the tip out past the shroud of the gun. - ie cutting the shroud with hacksaw to achieve it. the welding tip seemed to be about 5mm proud of the shroud.

I read that on a web site too - maybe it would be better maybe it won't or maybe it's just someone who found it suits them and it's a personal preference

I'm probably going to be a pot calling a kettle black for various reasons* but why do torch manufacturers make them like they are if they work better with the tip exposed??

*Yeah I know I hacked about a new welder but at least I did it cos it was useless as supplied!!

Stick out is normally the amount of wire protruding from the tip, is also known as burn back and can be adjusted on pro sets

And your opinion on cutting 5mm of the end of a shroud so that the tip is flush with the end of the shroud - I think we've established that that was what the OP was refering too

I'd leave the shroud as designed unless you need to get in a tight space then increase the gas flow a bit to compensate.

Ahh now that's a handy thing to do to an old shroud for those tight corner fillet welds

Still doesn't explain what I think I've read in the past on the interweb - I thought the shroud was longer to shield the wire coming out of the tip and stop actual contact

also to keep the contact tip out of the weld pool & help prevent the wire burning back into the tip.......can you see what it is yet?

After doing similar internet research I cut my shroud back (only about 3mm) level with the end of the tip and it made a noticeable improvement to my welding. Didn't have to touch the gas flow.

he says that having the tip out leads to better penertration and better wleding? also has a pickture of it.

Having the tip stick out the shroud allows you to get it closer to the work and that increases the current.

Gives more penetration but will overheat the tip easier.

Mine is near flush with the shroud. My big gun has an adjustable shroud.
