halls cone cutters are a good make just dont run them 2 fast and use a good cutting compound. there only any good on thin materials

Another vote for Halls and follow the advice above

Another vote for the G&J Hall ones, expensive, but worth it.

I bought a cheap one ages ago, think that only made holes by pushing hard on the drill.

Keep speed low and use oil, as Brightspark has said.

Aldi have a cheap set in at the moment. I have found them to be perfectly good for occasional DIY jobs. Depends how much you intend to use them I suppose.

I've had a set of these and used them up to 3mm steel in the bench drill and they are still going fine after moderate use.

I think it depends on how much use you are going to give it. If you are just curious to see if one is any use or does the kind of things you expect, or it's for light use, Toolstation do sets for £15.

However, it strikes me that cone bores and step drills have always been expensive and they're one of those things like taps and dies, where the difference in quality between cheap ones (£15-20) for three or Aldi offers, and expensive ones (£30 each and more) is huge.

Heller is a brand I'll add to the list of suggestions.
