Just received a quote for 457x152x67 universal beam in S355 @£770/tonne and 180x90x26 PFC in S355 @£1080/tonne. I thought prices were supposed to be coming down

Prices are slowly coming down round here. Just priced a job with loads of channel in it.

yeah channel was pricey even before the hike, In the early 2000s I was doing porta frames, and if you went over the standard 20' bay size, you would end up using 3x9 channel instead of wood for the bottom perlin plate, this was around triple the price of wood......

Spot-on Hitch, 200x75x23 PFC is £870/tonne!
Does seem strange that these are per tonne prices though. The manufacturing process is exactly the same and the raw material is exactly the same, so you would expect the tonne price to be somewhere near similar. I must be missing something - tooling costs, supply and demand?

Scrap price down to £20/ton3 mths ago was £180. Not worth the time effort or fuel to take it now.
£20 bite there hand off, theyve stoped paying round here.......

Thats interesting. Theres still loads of rag/scrap men going round with flat bed trucks stuffed to the gills with old bikes, radiators and whatever else they can get their hands in my neck of the woods. Maybe their days are numbered?

Hi,
it's the 'sudden' ecconomic downturn I reckon...
the countries that bought all of the scrap previously (China?) have now got problems with credit/cash flow and they can't buy it so the price is falling.
That may change in, say, six months when the various banks around the world learn to trust each other again and cash starts to flow. Prices might start to creep up again...
it could be worth buying in some scrap if it's cheap enough and you have somewhere to store it!
I've thought for a quite a while now that the US election would have a major impact on the recession, etc. New man, new ideas, etc helps, but it's more to do with people expecting things to be be better and individually they all try that bit harder for themselves and suddenly everything drops into place.
Political kidology, and most people are suckers as they'll believe in fairies if it suits them, but it works.
