Just been pricing up some steel to build a new hot bench...... all I can say is it must have been a Daaaaamn long time since I bought any for my own use..... helluva a lot different than just picking up the phone at work and saying we need ...this ...this and this....

It has shot up this year, reflected by what the scrappie pays for a MOT failure, used to get about £50 a car and at one time nearly had to pay them to take it, last week handed an Accord in and got £240...also noticed a couple of Transits now doing the housing estate rounds collecting anything metal.

If you read this story you'll see that the already ill-fated A16 Peterborough-to-Spalding relief road has suffered the theft of some stainless handrails. Scrap is booming again and so are the prices.

Last time I ordered some steel for myself, I was suprised how cheap it was..... the way work carry on you'd think it was solid gold.

yep dont have anything your gunna keep made of metal sitting on the ground...had a washing machine go for a walk not long ago from inside my house boundry wall

I Had 3 heavy duty van batteries nicked from in the LOCKED porch they were on charge waiting to be put back on my Disco , They switched of the charger and put the clips in the right places on the machine as not to short out and even unpluged the charger as well so it was safe !! the police said cause there was no signe of dammage on the door i must of left it unlocked and i should be more carefull in futcher,, (( I said do you think ime that stupid ??)) ,,, NOTHING METAL IS SAFE ANYMORE,,,

lmao, got more pikies round here than customers.
one lot came in, spotted a stainless tank and wanted it, i said no.
next day thet drive in upto the tank, spotted me and ****ed off, its indoors know out of sight.
as said,no metal is safe!

We get them in work all the time wanting to relieve us of all our batteries....oh and the scrap steel....AS IF

We've got a large industrial skip, sides are about 10 feet high but the pikies were climbing in to remove scrap so we've had to fit a couple of "lids" that have to be lifted off with an FLT.

lol that wouldnt stop em round ou rway a local travveler has a hiab with a hydraulic grab hese been done a few times for lifting broken down cars from side of road with it

them pikies take anything we had drainpipe guards at the workshop to stop people driving into the pipes infact the full site had them until those nice people removed them all fastened down or not it will go

yes the price of steel has gone up lots, got a price for a job two month ago, since then its gone up £300, pleased i gave the customer a estimate saying steel will vary.

I build radiation shielding cabinets using lead slabs; a couple of years back I quoted a customer based on £4000 for the lead; by the time they'd placed the order a few weeks later we had to spend £11000...!

And the thieving gyp... er, self-employed travelling folk cut their way in to one of our storage containers a few weeks back but didn't take anything, even though there was a fair bit of scrap metal in there. Shame they'd attacked the wrong container, the other one had sixteen tonnes of lead in it - needless to say it doesn't any more. What a shame for the poor hard-working gentlemen.

Like the acronym..... steel price is a joke, it will cost me around £200 to make a 2x1m hot bench, don't think I'll bother, just get a few of those slotted work tables from Stakesy's and bolt em together...
