Steel prices

Hello,

Could anybody give me an idea of how steel, flat, boxed and tuned should cost?
I tried to find some prices on the phone from a local company but the guy who I was speaking to didn't seem to be interested in helping me unless i placed a large order....what an a@@@@.

The prices depend on the sizes Mike, give us an idea of what you're after and what prices you were quoted and someone can advise as to whether you were being ripped off or not.
Many stockholders won't deal with Joe Public, it's simply not worth them bothering for one length of this and one sheet of that.
There is a 'sticky' list at the top of this section of those willing to sell small quantities to diyers, have you had a look through it?

Hope this helps, its what I pay locally, its the size, then the cost per length, the length it comes at and the cost per metre.

Its the sizes I use, don't have prices for any others.

Mike, who were you talking to? I see your a fellow Essex man. I've used IS&G in Chelmsford in the past. They are happy to sell to Joe Pub and their delivery charge wasn't silly either. Give them punt.

Rainham steel, just around the corner from me.

I like to how much it cost before I buy no matter what the purchase.
As I intend to build a tool safe/bench that won't be coming out of my shed once it's built as my first project, I would like to get the materials as cheap as I can.

I'm not sure of any other local stockists who will sell to jo public.

I once went to our local scrappie and came away with a trailer load of box, flat bar and tube, all had been used but was very clean..the total was a mind blowingly cheap £30....new it would have cost over £200

I just paid £85 inc delivery for 2x7.6m 50mm sq 3mm thick box section.

I cant believe how cheap steel is 6mm Round Bright bar 39p per metre seems a bit of a bargain to me. I dont buy by the ton, but the amount I get when I order it from my wholesaler even with recent price rises seems ok.

I tend to get a couple of dozen assorted lengths at a time, with delivery the bill is usually about £120, when you see the amount on the workshop floor then I have to agree with you..seems cheap enough to me..especially when you think of the value of the items it can be turned into.

We have 4 or so stockholders around here but the prices vary hugely, the one I always use is Christmas steel in shrewsbury; really friendly and helpful. Aaaand most importantly about half the price of all the others for just about everything. Recently bought 7.6 meters of 40x40 2mm box and 7.6 meters of 30x30 2mm box plus a bunch of other bits of offcuts ......£35.00
can't believe how the price of steel compares with timber. Seems mad to me.
