steel prices

Hi

I was wondering if someone could tell me me roughly how much i should be paying for the following steel:-

100 x 50 x 3 mild steel box 7.5m (standard length?)
30 x 30 x 3 mild steel box 7.5m
1000 x 2000 x 3 mild steel sheet/plate

I dont want to wander into a steel stockists and be taken advantage of and pay over the odds!

Prices can vary wildly, you are better off calling ones local to you and asking for quotes

It depends how much you are buying. If you buy one piece of each it will be expensive, bulk brings the price down drastically. Some box section I bought was £12 a length but for 10 it was 2/3 of the individual price.

What I tend to do is ring around the different suppliers, find the cheapest price, knock off 10%, then ring the supplier that I "want" to use and tell them that I've been offered that price and If they can match/beat it I'll order now, also telling them that the "other" company was offering to waver the delivery charge. Of course, this only really works if you're spending at least £2/300 (the delivery charge waver bit).

I was on the phone to one of our steel suppliers when i read this thread so...

100*50*3 RHS, we are charged £34-58 a length, 30*30*3 SHS, £12-84 a length, and 2m x 1m x 3mm plate, £32-00.
I asked what joe public would pay, someone off the street sort of thing; £49-40 for the RHS, £18-09 for the SHS and £41-65 for the plate. Said they would do it for £100 all in + VAT if they were pushed.

All based on single 7.5m lengths. Delivered.

as with all commodity prices the price can vary stupidly e.g. fuel prices going up over the libia problem

The story i got from our stockholder is that its to do with the stuff thats going on in Aus.
I've a letter somewhere from Corus stating the same.

Thanks for the replies everybody. I've had a qoute from one of the local stockholders of 112 + vat Inc delivery still need to ring the other one tomorrow.

Ive never bought steel before so didn't want to walk in and get ripped off!
