Not as good as the margin my Son in Law nearly paid100*6 flat @ 6.1m £16-95 each
50*25*3 UEA @ 6.1m £8-00 each
Cost me £65 ish, delivered. We use a lot of steel, but your paying double what we do. Sounds a lot when you think they are still making their margin selling to us at those sorts of rates.
You honestly need to work clever and keep those costs down on raw materials. Send the quotes out to a few an keep telling them politely "too much, bought it elsewhere" rather than just letting them guess that the job never came off, tell them so they can get keener. my main supplier is about 15-20% cheaper than he was and as a result of this and another had to drop out as he couldn't keep up so I replaced him with a bigger firm.
Always shop about and never rely on one firm, they are in it for the money so make them work for every % they make. Giving high Discount to "get in" then raise costs later is frankly common.
Yeah, that's alright if you are ordering a lot of gear, but, with respect, if you are only ordering odd bars, once it a blue moon, the reps are not going to fall over themselves to give decent (if any) discounts.
Only works for so long.
I've just shut my account with one of the big national stockholders. Service was terrible with so many problems.
Usually have 3 or 4 working for us, around 20K a month at the moment - some have better credit terms than others, and save the really big orders for a new supplier keen to go in cheap for the first time.
All just a game, but they know the rules!
