Steel lock up security

Landlord has relented and is letting us put a cabin outside in the yard.
Mainly for storing paint and gas bottles (Allowed to have a container on the grounds of health and safety)...so....other than some warning signs, a bunded area and a fire 'stinguisher, is there anything else that should be in there?

Whats the best sort of lock to go for, something like this? It will be a steel cabin so can be welded to.

Ventilation is a must. Other than that bundled area for liquids, no smoking signs and fire extinguisher in one of those nice plastic boxes!

Try and segregate materials if possible. There is loads of info on gas cylinder storage on British compressed gas association website but I bet your mainly going to be storing no flammable.



Oh and some lights and intruder alarm in there would be good

Just one of those tubular type heaters you see in site bogs do Karl? Not thought about that, frost a bit of a killer on paint isnt it

If your storing flammables then the wiring regs get interesting! From memory heat surface temp can't exceed 75oC.

Would you also need to fit ATEX switches and fittings etc?

Would have to check. If the switch gear was outside the area then no and depending on the level or risk and type of material being stored then a sealed unit might b enough.

Thats em Paul, got a couple in the paint store, think theres one in the compressor shed, not really sure how effective they are in the really cold weather, mostly keep the frost off, thats about it i would think.

Big heavy and hard to get at. The door is the strongest but so they often go through the side. Will be interesting though when the sparks from the cutter hits all the fumes!

Was o a test site once and watched a simulated truck bomb was 1.5 miles away big fire ball, shipping container flying through air then nothing for a seconds or two then shock wave and noise nearly knocked my off my feet!

Whats your thoughts on the lock?

We had something like this on the armoury at the shooting club, used a double sided mortise type key with the "teeth" cut at 45° which need authorisation for new keys to be cut.

The best setup I've seen is where the lock was only accessible, through two holes, you had to put your arms in, up to your elbows. No one likes to put there hands in a hole, esp when they shouldn't be. Pikeys just wont do it from what I' been told, and if your storing Propane they are your No1 suspect.

The lock assembly was inside the locup not on the outside like some where you have to put you hands in. If the lock is outside even covered with a heavy box, they'll just gas axe it off

Had a look today, sorted a 10' x 8' out, where its going is directly beneath a camera so they would have to be fairly brave. Having said that a 10mm stainless lock box and a chunky padlock should do the trick.

Paul, from what you intend to store, I would involve the fire brigade for advice, possibly something you do not want to do, I'd keep them in the loop, especially from an insurance point of view.........

I had to do something similar, when work intended using a container to store O&A.

No, that's a fair point, the fire brigade are round fairly regularly although didnt seem too bothered about what we have stored in the unit last time they did a visit.

There probity only planing to park in front of the cafe directing traffic if you have a fire! It's a fair comment to get them involved so they know what's in there if they need to. Have you checked your insurance will cover a container in car park?
