Steel bits, offcuts needed, smallish sizes & info on Lincoln E. 6013's?

Hello everyone, Sip Here!,

Am I seriously being ripped off when I buy steel? Everyone and everywhere seems to be very expensive.. Especially when I practice and mess around....

Sunday i ordered from a company 1000mm x 40mm x 3mm flat steel bar at £4.35 and £5.00 P&P... Reasonable i guess, they do cutting so i asked for it to be cut into 10 x 10cm pieces....it arrived today uncut.. great!

That was one story, another was 20 plates of 100mm x 100mm for £13.00 + £8.00 P&P, they didnt last long either... I've just realised that this practice is getting dear..and addictive!

(I have also no way to cut metal without annoying the neighbours so i cannot bulk buy)


If anyone knows a source of offcuts varying in size & thickness, please let me know!

Also, i'm looking at trying some Lincoln Electric 6013's that are on sale at 10KG's for £22.50! Anyone used these before?

Get a hacksaw and build some muscles How could they cut 40mm flat bar (4cm wide) into 10cmx10cm (100mm wide) ? They probably couldn't understand the request, I can't.

....he did write 10x 10cms though ......but a hacksaw is a great tool and reasonably quiet if used correctly

They sold the metal bar in 1 meter lengths - the bar i bought was 3mm in thickness , and 40mm wide.. i just wanted them to cut the length of the bar into 100mm sections. Hacksaw would take forever!

The Lincoln Electric 6013's are nice; that is what i use.

The Fleetweld 37's are what I have (5lb/$10). Seem to work fine for me. They also sell a Murex 6013D that is supposed to be good for vertical down.

Never got peelers with them but the slag does nearly fall off by itself.

Edit: some don't care for them. They are more used to a different brand. I'd think you need to be a production welder to tell the difference in the major brand rods.

Murex do some 6013s in a white box, theyre cheap and cheerful, we hardly use 6013 mainly all 7016s & 18s

Just for an experiment I have some 50mm flat in 3mm thickness and it took me under a minute to cut a piece off with a well used hacksaw blade. Are you using a junior hacksaw ? I cut mine into squares when I was bored and made cubes with a couple of nuts inside so they rattle.

I'm just inpatient, anything except 'riding the arc' is'nt very appealing.. i'm too eager to weld, i am It was a tiny junior hacksaw with a pretty screwed blade, but i'll pop down to B&Q and get some fresh blades.... This was the same hacksaw i used 5 years ago, cutting open a fridge compressor to see what was inside...it took me 3 hours to cut through its 4mm case

one of the best investments I've ever made was a 2nd hand horizontal/vertical bandsaw. Cost me about £50 off the bay, even new they only run about £170 ish IIRC.

Get a proper sized hacksaw and some decent blades They're not twice as fast as a junior saw, more like 100!
