Steampunk; anyone doing it?

Lois & I went to a Steampunk music gig at Bressingham Steam Museum a couple of weeks ago to see two (not quite localish) bands: Thy Last Drop and Metropolis who I have recently been following on-line.

We originally went for the music, but looking around at the rest of the audience in their Steampunk costumes and attire, and with their gizmos and gadgets we though we might like to give it a go. So any advice you guys could offer us would be most welcome

I like the genre as a concept, but I'm not into the dressing up, to me imagine you live in a steam age with no concept of current technology and what you think things would be like now, after 250 years of developing the steam engine etc

Interestingly enough, I have never been into dressing up, but me and 'er-indoors were the only ones at the gig who weren't dressed in costume and the Steampunkers' did seem to be having a great time playing and acting the part.

That is what the interwebnet thingy is all about. Google is your friend.....mainly.



Broadly, it is the continued development of the steam engine rather than the adoption of the other technologies.

Well there is that part to it as well..... I do have a light fabrication workshop

Steam punk seams to be a miss-matched creation of Pressure gauges,clocks and copper pipe usually assembled into some sort of light fitting. I know a chap that does quite well selling his wares, He calls himself "Dr Dave"

The classic was the steampunk Keyboard and monitor. Brass goggles was a big site for that kind of thing..

I didn't realise there was such a thing as Steampunk music (or dressing up for that matter!). I've been accused of making Steampunk stuff myself by some in the past ...but that definitely ain't what I'm about! It seems to be a label put on a lot of sculpture by others rather than by the people whose work it actually is.

I like Stephane Halleux's work ...whether it's Steampunk or not.

I find some steampunk sculpture fun, and the fashion can be interesting... but I find the artistic misuse and misunderstanding of engineering components distracting...

I find some of the decoratives gears etc annoying too. I want them all to do something, even if its incredibly complicated and ultimately pointless!

There was a very vigorous quality assurance regime

Ironically that was not my first foray into this realm

Helping a friend out who had a failing rural bed and breakfast and 3 self contained accommodation units.

Received a telephone plea for help one day, to help strip down pallets and remove the nails to provide material for a little project.
My job was to knock the pallets apart, extracting nails and the like. My friend is measuring, sawing and nailing these pieces together. When we stopped for a cuppa I asked what he was making. He replied dungeon and restraint apparatus...............He was converting two accommodation units into a pay by the hour theme rooms for those with that kind of personal taste.

After the cuppa we returned back to work, with him painting the rough timber surfaces of a bondage crucifix and restraint rack. I asked if he was going to sand the timber down first.
He replied, 'Why?'
I said, 'Because of the splinters!'
He replied 'Splinters! Splinters!................I'll charge extra for the splinters'
