Steam boiler welding-codings

now then, friend of mine owns a standard gauge train and is restoring it, he's asked me if ican find out what codings are needed for welding pressure vessels, up to 50mm plate, with a view to possibly paying for me to go get coded as a cheaper alternative to hiring a welder. Any ideas?

It will be decided by whichever organisation deems the loco safe and issues a steam safety certificate. @doubleboost may know best but I'd imagine it would require 6G mma, or a tig root and fill with MIG.

We have been trying to get the specs from a couple of steam preservation societies but they seem more interested in handing out their pet welders cards than actually helping

Mma would be the most practical process due to restrictions with machine size mig wise

Speak to your Insurance Company they should have a preference. It will probably be this...http://www.hs-compliance.com/technicalinformation/pe-directive.aspx.........but there will be an authorised "Inspector" company

Not sure how it applies to your boiler but many years ago i had a lot of large bore steam pipe to weld on site in position. That was all scratch start tig root then mma. No codings involved but full ndt, i have a feeling the insurers sent a guy out with ultrasound kit and borescope cameras. They also wanted to sample piece welded at the same time with same batch of materials.

My father in law designed & built a three drum yarrow style bolier for a 28ft steam launch, it passed its hydraulic & steam test last year. Its all welded construction, Iirc mig was not used due to porosity concerns.
Its all mma welded.
As above go with what the insurance company specifies.

No problems , like I say I asked him to see the lads at the two preserved railways he's at and all he came back with with details for a welder to do it, will get him to phone the insurance companies up and make some enquiries.

Oh and I'll get some pictures. Best part about knowing him is every time Mrs dan grumbles about me buying landrovers, I just quietly remind her that it could be a train....
