Guys. I've always had some degree of static build up inside me, in fact, I cant wear a wind up watch. I've recently got an S class merc and the build up from that is pretty bad. Problem is, if I get out of the car to greet my client (I'm a chauffeur) and don't touch the car when my feet are on terra firma, poor sod gets zapped! Car anti static strips never worked for me in the 70s. Anyone found a cure?

I have the same problem, and i wear pretty much only cotton.

I have found the only way for me, was to change the way i got out the car, i hold the metal door frame whilst i get out. Its a habit now and it really cut the shocks down.

Cotton can/does still generate decent static voltages. But im not allowed to go out naked anymore

Pure cotton won't create static, try some on a balloon, lots of stuff are mixed fibre now

You must already be charged up

I used to wear watches all the time but got fed up of wrecking them each time I worked on an engine or similar

ahh yes but the flash ones had reflectors fitted to them, add to that your go faster stripes aftermarket fog lamps wired up as brake lights and you would have been a chick magnet

The highly insulating nature of rubber or polyurethane soled shoes makes them amongst the worst for allowing charge to remain on the body.

Leather soled shoes are probably one of the better solutions for static electricity problems. Although leather can acquire charge, it doesn't charge very strongly, and is usually conducting because of it's moisture content. Alternatively, there are conductive shoes

I have worked on plants that had an explosion risk from static, We had to wear all cotton clothing and special anti-static boots, Rubber soled but had a very high carbon content and the back of the boots had a broad white stripe to denote that they 'were anti-static

Blast hose is conductive too, I've had some large sparks when blasting with ordinary rubber hose.

I used to work in a boat factory, Thames marine. We had a job polishing a mould for a 28ft yacht, four of us with lambswool polishing mops on what seemed like half an acre of shiny grp.
One of us got a proper strong static belt about once every minute. Made the others laugh until it was your turn! We had to earth the mould with a copper cable into the water test tank out in the yard to stop it.

I often get some pretty good static zaps at work.
Recently I had my phone in my pocket, one of my earphones in my ear, the other inside my top.
My pocket touched a roll of material and I got a simultaneous zap in my ear and on my nipple!
To say it made me jump was an understatement!
I also had one on the finger that actually made my arm go numb!
People love watching me wind rolls of material out, they know it's only a matter of time before I Yelp.
