hi all im thinking of teaching myself to tig weld i can mig and stick but have never done tig i was just wanting advice about what machine would be best for me i will be doing up to 3mm stainless and 3mm ally thanks chris
Hi Chris,
If you are planning on doing aluminium you will need an AC/DC machine which makes it quite a bit more expensive. Whatever you are TIGing you will need pure Argon (you can't get away with the Argon/CO2 from your MIG).
There are modern inverter machines which give many more set-up options (bells and whistles), are portable and energy efficient (likely to cope on a 13A outlet). There are also conventional transformer based machines which are larger, heavier, need more power but may well be more durable/repairable over a longer period of time. There are cheap Chinese made machines on ebay - pot luck with those, some people report good results but the machines seem to be largely unsuported. There are secondhand options. The R-Tech machines seem to be highly regarded on here. I bought myself a Lorch which is a great machine and great quality but they cost around £2K. You could try making your question a bit more specific - like what is your budget?
