Buy first then ask questions - I did the same bought an SIP welder and a cheap autodarken helmet from ebay........... I still have both
- The trials and tribulations of the SIP are in the link in my sig line
- The Autodarken helmet is in the corner of the garage somewhere after I did a comparison with one from the forum shop (on sale or return - well Steve did say if I wasn't happy etc)
Anyway I know nothing about either of your purchases but I'm sure someone will be along soon
i was considering getting an ebay special mask and then found a link to here where i saw some posts saying they were poor and i wanted a mask for the weekend. i then had a look for welding supplies online and found a place that had them on offer not too far from where i work so popped in at lunch and got giddy i didnt bother with questions i just saw a row of masks and went that one please. i just remembered the name off here
cheers mate im sure it will be comfortable to use as last time i had a go at welding i had one of them all dark masks and couldnt see when i started as i was looking in the wrong place and other than that it was close eyes tightly and tack
As I am only on the 2nd night of my welding course I can not compare helmets only the bog std college type and was given the Starparts one to try as they have a deal with a local welding supplies merchant if I want one. It seemed worlds apart from the first one I used. I will see how much it is. It seems to range from 50 to 70 pounds online.
It really depends on what type of welding you are doing. I picked an air fed system with speedglas 9001 helmet and its a brilliant piece of kit BUT when we went to R-tech welding I tried a simple helmet (the guy said it was an expensive one) £80 seemed cheap to me after seeing the price of speedglass etc.
BUT what he meant was they have perfectly useable ones for half that (I think)
But more importantly the point I am making is the speedglas I purchased is great for long term welding but for quick grab and weld a joint or two its no use whatsoever as it steams up without the air system running.
So as soon as I get a few quid I will be looking for a cheaper helmet to be able to use as on off, on off, on off etc etc etc BUT what I will say is it really is easier to weld when you can see what you are doing and a 9.99 jobbie might seem good value but it will be false economy.
