Because it works with another bottle and not with this. What else would it be other than bad gas?

I doubt you'll get a deal, they are bleedin' expensive and thats that. The gas isn't too bad but the bottle rental is dear enough.

Would he qualify for the Volkszone deal with BOC - that's affordable and the best deal available when I was researching my gas supply.
I would suggest you try a different supplier.
Why don't you check to see if there's an SGS gases distributor near you.

I've just did my sums comparing SGS argon to the BOC 'volkszone' deal with a 20l cylinder of pure argon, ignoring the refundable deposit you pay on the SGS cylinder (100 euro).
If you use 1 cylinder of gas a year SGS is cheaper, 2 cylinders both companies gas is approx the same, more than 2 cylinders BOC is cheaper.
There is another company who supply rent free cylinders in Ireland and they deliver it for a small fee.

I know nothing about them but their price is similar to SGS even taking into account the delivery charge. By the time I include my fuel costs and time driving the 60 miles to get the SGS cylinder it might be cheaper.

Closest sgs to me would be clonakilty. Thats about a 30 min drive. I was using a company in dublin to send me down the bottles. I just realised there's a dealer only 10 mins away from me that do stargas also. I'm going to ring them in the morning and see will they take back the bottle instead of waiting till Tuesday to have the other company come and collect it.

That's still a bad service, having to get 3 bottles before you get a good one.
My advice would be to use this bottle, return the empty to get your deposit back and then switch to someone more reliable like SGS.
