I dont know if this was a 'reputable' company that you used or if it was done on the cheap as a homer.... if the first, and you paid a decent price, id be looking at taking it further now. The welder clearly has not a clue. As someone mentioned above, hes trying to baffle you. As you probably now know, s/s comes in grades, such as 308, 309, 316, 347....hes pulling a fast one.
