hi does any one no if there is any grades of ss that takes a magnet as i tried one on my ss exhaust welds and it took a hold
I've been wondering about this since I took my last pile of scrap metal to be weighed in,I had a drum from an automatic washing machine that I figured was stainless steel,but the old feller at the scrapyard stuck a big magnet to it and declared it to be "not stainless,just steel".
I think the old feller was trying his luck,and that some grades of stainless are magnetic and some aren't.

The scrap dealers always pull that one,they'll tell you "its chrome iron mate", Martensitic and Ferritic grades are magnetic, austinetic grades are generally non magnetic, grade 321 is slightly magnetic, as are some duplex grades, most austinetic grades will become slightly magnetic with cold working, try picking up stainless drill swarf with a magnet.

Stainless comes in various grades for use in welding wire, none of which are described as a mix of stainless and mild steel. Mixing the two would tend to make the stainless brittle and give it poor corrosion properties (like what would happen if you weld a stainless exhaust with mild steel wire).

Technicaly I guess he wouldnt be wrong as an Iron would be a base for the S/S, but only someone who wouldnt have a clue would say 80% stainless to 20 M/S as these are only colective names for the componants that make em,
Stainless is an alloy of Nickel, Molybdenum,Manganese,Iron,chromium the % change for the diffrent grades and not all elements except iron, are used....

If you want to know ask the guy exactly what grade of wire he used and we'll look it up for you. There are a few grades of wire that would be appropriate for welding 304 stainless for use in exhausts (308 is the wire I'd go for), and none of them are magnetic, and none would have looked like the 100% mild steel wire clearly used in your photos. Non contain 20% mild steel either, nor could be described as such by a pedant - too much carbon even in mild steel.

It's a shoddy job, will probably last a reasonable time, but more succeptable to rust and fatigue than had it been done properly. If it were me I'd leave it on the car and try for 50% cash back as compensation for shoddyness - but only as a compromise. Doesn't matter if that means they'll lose money on the job - what matters hopefully is they'll learn from it. Their shoddyness is surely from ignorance rather than cheapness as stainless wire foesn't cost that much more.
