Stainless steel wire cup brush caution.

Just come out of the garage after using a month old Faithful S/Steel cup type wire brush on some 6mm stainless rod frame work. I thought I could feel something scratching my leg, on further inspection I removed at least 15 strands of wire stuck right through my thick heavy duty work pants. Glad I was wearing face protection !
The cup brush looks to have lost most/all of it's bristles half way down their length.
I have had a larger non Stainless steel cup brush for years in one side of the bench grinder and it's still like new, is it the stainless steel wire or have I been unlucky.

Cheap and nasty ones will shed the wires quickly. Buy a better quality one

Reminds me of using a 4.5" angle grinder and cup brush while wearing an old woolly hand knitted jumper. One hand was on the grinder, the other was manouvering the workpiece when the brush snagged the jumper and wound itself up into a tight mass on my chest trapping my hand and stalling the motor!
I couldn't get my thumb onto the off switch and smoke was pouring out of the jumper as I desperately tried to unplug the grinder that was plugged into a hanging extension lead.
The result was mild scorch marks on my hand and chest and a completely ruined woolly jumper.
I always wear a leather apron and jacket now, and woolly jumpers, normally hand knitted by my dear old Mum are saved for boat fishing trips!

6mm rods put all the pressure on one point so it will push between the wires causing them to fall out, unlike on a nice flat weld on plate were you get a even distribution of pressure your better of and safer with a hand held wire brush just make sure the welds are hot when you wire brush them and if they cool garryson blocks work well

plus any bits in your eyes cant be removed with a magnet

Received an email at work recently regarding these wire brush cups being used in an angle grinder. Some guy was using it and it caught the neck warmer he was wearing, dug into it and strangled him. So , if you use one, make sure any loose clothing is WELL out of the way.

or use a milwaukee grinder with adjustable rpms and overload protection... simple as that... wire brushes are not meant to be used at the maximum rpms

i hate the grinder type wire brushes. Not to fond of the cup ones either although i bought a Bosch one and it has been good so far. I have a brass brush in my bench grinder and have a stainless one on a bar that fits in the lathe

Got a 8" wire wheel on my bench grinder. It shed a lot of wires when it was new but once it got over it's initial moulting it's been holding it's bristles well.

Hi There is no wire sticking out past the cup now after another go (suitably attired this time).

been looking on the internet and "Lessmann" do them,they are a lot more expensive but I may give then a try

Did you know the cup brushes for 9 " grinders have a steel ring around them, when the wires wear down to it, cut it off and you get another half inch of life out of it.

I was using my Milwaukee angle grinder (Great grinder if anyone is thinking of buying one) on 10mm bar and it snagged on the bar and ripped it out of my hand and caught the power lead and ripped it out of the socket.There was few scratches on the grinder but every thing was fine.I now use a polisher to do all my wire brushing now it turns much lower but it take the same time to do the work.

I couldn't, I was shaking so much so I got the wife to do it!

I caught my boiler suit leg in a big old 30 hp Lister Diesel flywheel, I ended up with shorts ? Luckily it was only ticking over.

A set of brown cords (that dates it) tore from the knee to my nuts when a wire brush caught on them, due to being carelessy wielded by me on an aquarium frame.
That was just an old B&D drill too, nothing industrial. See, that's what happens when you get blasé about things in your leisure moments doing stuff at home. I'd never have done something so stupid at work.
