Is there any probloems with welding stainless steel to mild steel as I have a pile of used stainless and mild box that I'm planning to make sum trassles out of for my new welding bench.

ive welded stainless to mild steel with stainless rods and vice versa and had no probs http://www.bssa.org.uk/topics.php?article=101

Sounds like it shouldn't be a problem then, I thort it would be ok but a second opinion never hurts, looks like a job 4 tomorrow.

welded stainless pipe to mild steel with mig using argon mix 20% co2 made a really nice job

We used to weld thick (2"-3") mild steel flanges into stainless rolled tubes about a foot to three feet in diameter for sewerage treatment machinery, the root run was tig with 316l rod and subsequent runs were stick or sometimes mig with stainless rods or wire, never a single problem with a weld.

welding mild to stainless using mild steel wire will give you no issues or visa versa.
if anything the weld seems to flow better IMO,

what will happen is the Chromium will get drawn from the Stainless pearent metal into the weld, so the area immediatly around the weld will oxidise and the weld will be specced with oxidisation. But this is only asthetic
Oh also due to the Chromium content the weld goes b@sta#d hard.

Sparkplug, for your SPECIFIC use - eg making "trassels" (are you a cowboy?), you'll be fine cobbling together any old material with any old welding wire, but if in doubt, give it a smack with a big 'ommer to check the welds actually work.

For anything else, listen to Al.

They turned out alright in the end I was just concerned about the strength of the welds because, the table top is about 300kg, the project currently on it is about 150kg then when I jump on it from time to time there's another 100kg.

Only thing is the bench turned out a bit high so I need to shave about 6'' off at some point.
