Hello chaps, my latest little project is to remove the cat from the up pipe on my triumph sprint st 1050.
Since I modified an of the shelf can and made all the brackets to fit it is time to go one step further in the name of performance ( well actually the cat is starting to melt so now restricting gas flow. I did the same to a friends bike after it lost about a third od its total power).
I would prefer to pick up locally if poss for tea money. I just need a couple of bits 45mm diameter to allow me to cut out the cat and weld in a free flowing replacement.




The middle pic is the s bend I made to connect to the can and the bottom pic shows the brackets.
When I've finished post some pics of the complete system in place.
They could do with a polish again after 1500 miles service.

do you not need the cat for the mot?

ive never had a bike with a cat, all had loud cans though

No, bikes don't have emissions test. Also even with the cat if there was was an emissions test it would fail anyway as I'm running a non standard map.

got a mandrel bend today from a company near Wortley, Leeds for 20 quid. Not exactly tea money but perfect for the job and exact size 44.5 mm OD

Interestingly enough... Diesels were previously exempt from a cat check on the MOT, up until April 2014. I'm on a 4x4 forum and one of the first things that we always recommend to new owners (especially for the older models, where the EGR would get coked up) is to remove the cat and remove the EGR valve.

As of April 2014, however, the MOT tester must "check for the presence of a cat...on a vehicle that had a cat fitted when new" on diesel vehicles. So, in theory, this means removing cats from diesels will now fail an MOT.
The interesting twist is that the words are literally "...check for the presence..." so, as one of our members (a policeman!) stated; "if you replace the cat with a decat pipe, as long as you bolt the old cat to the rear bumper, then you will pass the MOT as it is present".

I suspect this will be addressed in a later rewrite

I'm saving the cat body so if the same happens with the bike test then I'll remove the honeycomb centre and weld in a pipe though middle to keep good consistant gas flow
