Stainless spring wire

I have a few parts to make that would be better in stainless. Last time I tried to use 316 welding rod, it is too soft and deforms in use, so I am thinking I need spring wire?

An example is this clip I bent up today, I used 2.4mm er80s-ni1 tig rod. It seems almost ideal but wont have great corrosion resistance for outside. It does have goood stiffness and is not going to bend in use.

Any ideas?

Fairly thin strong spring stainless steel wire can be had as fishing grip lead weight spring wire , . comes in about 6 inch lengths x 1.5mm and is very cheap

Even if they do not, you might be able to find the technical spec. of the stainless from their site (or an email enquiry).

You could also look at the vintage car and bike trade papers (e.g. Old Bike Mart). They would contain adverts for spring makers, whose sites might give you some useful leads.

Titanium tig rod?

I have no experience of it. Do you have some? Are they expensive?

Does it have to be 2.4mm or could you use other diameters?

Ideally I would get a range of diameters, 1mm, 1.5mm 2mm and 2.4mm would be useful.

I have no experience of it. Do you have some? Are they expensive?

It's quite springy.
And completely corrosion proof. (Within reason)

I've got a few different grades. I'll try bending some up tonight and see how it compares to 316.
Cost depends on diameter but goes upto about £3 for a 3' length.

Well I've got all this stuff which has been kicking around a while. It's not gone rusty it's just stained where it was stored with some mild steel rod.

I would not say it was extremely springy in fact it's quite soft but you might be able to compensate for that by using thicker gauge. If you want some just drive over and choose a selection.

Thanks for the offer @Pete. I've currently got an awful flu and wouldnt want to spread it to anyone.
I dont think soft is going to work based on previous attempts with 316.

Quick test, Equal lengths, bent at 90deg and put on some kitchen scales.
Measure the force required to deflect about 10mm

316 stainless 1800g
Grade 2 titanium 1000g
Grade 5 titanium 1300g

However,
Bend them to 45deg and the Grade 5 has the best recovery of the 3. with the Grade 2 the worst.

I'm wondering if some of the more exotic stainless fillers might be better, I'll dig some out..
