Hi ive just got the rtech mig 180 and the regulator squeals, gas appears to come out correct but the noise drives me crazy, i have only had the welder (new) for only a week does the regulator have to break in or is something possible damaged inside???

I assume this is the free reg they send out with the units. They'll only send you another one. Personally I'd throw it in the bin. I've seen those regs and they are cheap horrible things which they will no doubt replace with another cheap horrible one. Buy a half decent reg like a gasarc, Harris, victor etc they will be much better and give more consistent accurate gas flow.
is it making the noise from a defected part or is it just a cheap unit? to be honest i bought from of there website and the first one they sent had a dent in the top and a plastic spacer just sat in the tray on the inside i rang them and the instantly sent another one out next day delivery i cannot fault the service they have given me but the second one they sent out appeared fine until i tried to remove the nut on the rollers it was jammed solid i had to resort to wedging the rollers so they couldn't move, i ended up getting it of and it appears fine now but im going to mention it to them on monday.
Im not having much luck i bought the rage 2 cut off saw from machine mart and the frame is bent again took it back to them today and they are sorting it out on monday for me, dont know if you have seen these saws but the actual saw base is cheap and flimsy.

It's making a noise I'd guess because it's defective. But my point is it's not worth getting another one as they really are nasty regs. Level of service yes excellent but replacement part is junk. It's a free reg so no big loss just sling it in the bin and use a proper one.

This is mentioned ALOT. Rtech product arrives with fault, 1 phone call and the replacement is on the van. If the replacement has a fault then the next replacement is out the same day. Great service? I don't think so personally. Yes they are quick to rectifie a problem but they rectifie so many the faith in the product quality doesn't match the level of after care. The whole companies reputation stands purely on how quick they pick up and replace broken gear. Yet we love that
. I understand things go wrong and there for good back up is essential. But Rtechs back up is beyond excellent by the sound of it as they get a lot of practice replacing defective products. If I buy something I buy it on the basis that the reviews are good towards the product its self not how fast the guys can replace it.

Lol!! I do believe everything you said is correct, I was going to buy a clarke unit because machine mart is local to me but everybody said they are cheap Chinese crap on my previous post, when i was buying a new welder everyone recommended R tech and the product itself now i took their advice and bought one R tech is getting slated
but to be fair i went to machine mart and bought the rage 2 cut off saw got it home the base plate was bent and it doesn't cut true 
I have now exchanged that one for the evolution Raptor 355 coming tomorrow lets see how we get on with that then!!! Even the saw says British innovation made in Sheffield and on the unit itself says made in japan!!Here is another scenario what happened to me 3 weeks ago i bought a sander from toolstation i took it back was no good they sent it off to get fixed and i have only just got it back yesterday.
To be honest i think that everything you buy to an extent has there faults and majority of it regardless of what it says comes from china or there parts do.
I think that's just the way it is now.

Hi mate. Sorry I wasn't trying to say you've just wasted your money as I'm sure the unit will serve you well as others have the same unit and are happy. I was just saying that the 3rd reg is now been sent and as quick as they send it to you there would be alarm bells ringing in my head "why?" After all it's just a £10 reg that they chuck in for free so no biggy as I'd throw it away. The thing I struggle with is the customer service from them is mentioned a lot and always in positive light but a good company selling good products should rarely have the customer service mentioned when talking about warranty and returns as it only tells guys like me they get a lot of returns and are good at dealing with it
Yeah Richard i agree i did wonder why they didn't question me. i did my first project last night with it all, i built a lifting bar i am really please just need to get used to the machine and get some experience.

I too would rather have my money in something, which actually works, and where there is no need to find out how quickly a supplier can send a replacement! Never owned any new welding equipment, and other than a new HF generator on a TIG set after 18 years regular use, never had a single problem as used pro standard equipment if treated sensibly tends to work and carry on working.

Going back to the original post about the regulator squealing or 'singing', I have a couple of questions. What gas are you using, how full is the bottle and how are you setting the gas flow rate? The singing will be the diaphragm opening the gas needle valve at a high frequency and pulsing, the noise does not necessarily mean the regulator is faulty.

I have it sorted now it was a dodgy regulator which you get free with the welder!! R-Tech have recently sent me a new one and hopefully up to now is doing the trick,

One thing worth remembering for the future is to keep an eye on the bottle contents. With a single stage regulator as the bottle pressure drops output pressure rises and depending on how you test flow rate you might notice having to tweak the regulator more frequently to keep the same flow rate as the bottle empties.
