squaring off a grinding wheel

Is there a tool for squaring a bench grinding wheel?

Not turning the whole thing into a square (natch) just removing the groove you get ion the middle of it

I try to even wear as I use the grinder to not waste the wheel although it is easy to get a groove in a wheel used solely for tungstens.

Rexon (sold in B&Q???) recently had a plastic handle with a block of trimming carborundum set in it just for the purpose of wheel dressing.

Failing that get a 15 mm plus tungsten carbide tipped SDS drill and use that tip gently back and forth across the wheel whilst it is running to slowly dress off the excess.

If it is really deep consider a new wheel for your machines RPM.

prefer the wheel type myself, as stated eye protection...prefer face screen and a mask that dust is a killer!!

the wheel ones soon wear out diamond ones the best . or even use an old diamond disk or a carbide drill or another old grinding wheel the last 3 are best there free

only used diamond fixed in block on a surface grinder..i find it hard to get good square face freehand so prefer wheels..but each to there own

Dont use mm ones !! ive one from moons ago when i was an apprentice, gets very little use so still does job

i bought one its a crock o sh /// t didnt last 5 mins. i use 25mm carbide drills a lot so when i sharpen them on the green stone i dress my other wheels with em 1st 2 in one

If you use them upside down then the torque on the retaining screw unscrews it in a flash and bits all over the workshop.
Don't ask me how I know!

Axminster Power Tool Centre have good diamond grinding wheel dressers. I have one and used it a lot on my 12" x 2" wheels.

Yep the one with the wheel was was wheely good fun, SPDANGTINKLE all over the sodding place in about 5 seconds. Put it bacl together and it did it again, rang MM up and was sent a replacement for free, now I have tow of them, both with the retaining screw plug welded in. They do work but need repairing first. Oh and the dust is disgusting.

No no, (although I do have a block one and a star wheel one). Its 5/8" round with a diamond tip and I used to put a collar with grub screw on it to keep me straight and run it along the work rest on the grinder.

I agree, whatever you do, do not buy a MachineMart one they are useless.
Mine only lasted seconds before it fell apart.........
They replaced it with another one, but that was already loose before I used it so I TIG welded the screw up to stop it coming undone
