square peg in a round hole....

My other half has just bought a nice 'contemporary' wood burning stove (a "bodart and gonay zen".. whatever...) but the flue is a square section, all the chimney liners are round...

has anyone seen a square-to-round flue adaptor?

or if i need to 'make' an adaptor... would i start with the square and bash it round, or try and form equally spaced corners in a round pipe?? i can find absolutely nothing about the stove online (other than one tiny picture..)

any ideas gratefully received (though suggesting we've got the wrong stove to start with will result in me sending the other half round to your house and then she can give you that 'same look' i got when i said something similar ...)

You are more than welcome, fetches back nightmares of lobster back bends and transitions of the worst shapes you can imagine, all in 10swg stainless and inspected by someone who escaped when they were rounding up the SS.

The 'rectangle' is the base size..in the case of the example.

thanks - that makes more sense now (i was wondering if it was relating to a side-on profile or something)... i had a go in paper and it seems to work very nicely

how easy is it to bend 2mm steel clamped in angle iron / vice jaws? obviously it's going to be a bit of a crappy job just because of the time taken, but i'm hoping it's at least 'do-able'

You may struggle to make a decent job without a bender, if its only for a stove though perhaps appearance isn't too important. making it in 2 or even 4 pieces will help you, have a look at this one http://www.mig-welding.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?t=26339.

thanks for that link - perfect walk through, though i fear you're right about the bender, didn't think through the spiraling action as the bending progresses...
fortunately the adaptor is going to be right up in the chimney - i can bring down a false wall infront to hide the ugly stuff!

When I was making them I quite often formed the bend using 2 bits of heavy angle, clamped at the ends, don't forget each bend is only a few degrees, it's not as though you are doing 90 degrees every time.

For 2mm I think if you clamp well then put pressure on whilst tapping away gradually along the length it will go ok.

thanks for that - i suppose it's easier to score all the lines, fold one, weld over, fold next and weld over etc... rather than try to do all the welding on the finished article? there's only 5 inches of space inside afterall - even then i suppose the last few will be a pig to do... or make 2 halves as suggested by tig paul (that's probably the easiest way for a hopeless amatuer like me)
