Hi Hitch. Thanks for your reply. I saw a set up on the tube where a chap was able to drill a perfecet sq. hole on his drill press. I just thought how handy it could be, but could not find anything on google and wondered if the intellegencia of metal on here mighe know where I could get one. Malcolm.

it's called a Reuleaux Triangle.
its offset iirc and needs to sit in a jig.

I think you will need to make it. never seen one for sale

When I was a lad I asked my grandad how I could drill a square hole and without even pausing for a moment he said 'use a square drill'

Don't they make stepped broaches? Start with a round hole and the steps increasingly take out the corners until square.

Hydraulic punch would be the ultimate answer, if the metal you are punching is not thicker than about 1/2". Not just for square either; round and oblong dies are available too.

I looked into obtaining one for a fencing job, where the panels where held to the posts using coach bolts through the top and bottom rails. Only problem is that they are not cheap and I couldn't warrant it for that job. Ended up getting metal supplier to punch.

I did find a reasonably priced Chinese supplier, although I was a bit dubiuos over quality . Look good on the website though.....

Aren't all broaches stepped? I thought that was an intrinsic part of their design, as in gradually working outwards in steps.

You could just buy or make the dies and use an arbor, bearing or fly press. The size of hole and thickness of metal would decide which you would need or could use.
