Spraying Options

I am currently restoring a Lambretta GP150 Scooter, I have a brand new GP200 Engine to fit in it when its finished
I would really like to do all the Spraying myself.
I have done lots of spraying with Aerosols over the years, but never with a proper Spraygun
I have a 3 Phase 5.5HP 23cfm Compressor and I have just won a 3M Visionair AirFed Mask for £79 off of Ebay
I have a Spraygun that I got from Machinemart, it is only a cheap one that came with a pack of other tools
Would this be OK to use, or do I need to get a better quality spraygun?
What do you think would be the best paint for me to use Cellulose, 2 Pack etc
I did toy with the idea of spraying it all with Areosols

the machine mart gun will spray it mate my guns cost 350 notes each but ive painted with £20 guns in peoples garages and got a decent finish
personally id go for solvent basecoat n 2k lacquer or if you want a solid colour just get it in 2k
be warned just plugging a airfed in a compressor is not safe you should be using dried air through a coalescent (think thats the word) filter we just got a stand alone for £500 and then through a charcoal filter in the belt
breathing "bad" air can kill you i know 2 lads who got legionaries disease....

It depends what you are going to spray it with, as to if the gun is right. its in part to do with the needle size cellulose is a thin paint as is base coat, so for base or celly i would say a 1.2-1.3mm nozzle, now if you laquer base then a 1.4mm nozzle, for 2 pack a 1.4mm nozzle is also suitable. Aerosols are an expensive way of doing it. Local paint supplier runs celly or 2k out for about £18 a ltr. My personal thoughts are use 2pack as it builds nicely

id go for cellulose, much easier to work with than 2k, have a look through the paint tutorial at the top of the page

a solid 2k will spray far better than any 1k cellulose
itll build better you can cover alot more imperfections itll polish up better and itll go off as its got a activator in..

Dam, I did'nt know that
I thought the mask just plugged into the Airline and away I went.......

Just done a search on the 'Net and found these two coalescent Filters, does it just fit between the Compressor and Air Fed Mask?

What temperature does 2K need to work?
At this time of year it is hard for me to warm my Workshop upto room temperature for a long time

2k can be a little slow this time of year, but lift the temperature and it dries quickly. Use winter hardner mippa h5 and it dries ok in a couple of hours (touch dry)

The one on ccw is just the filter you need the housing for it aswell the one on ebay looks like its the full system
but air should be dried through a drier so im not 100% they will work as they should. do you get water through your lines?
personally if i paint in a shed, garage i just use a 3M filter mask i know its not the most effective but its better than breathing "bad" air
its up to you what you decide to go with..
as said you can get accelerator's to make the paint go off in low temp upol do a very good one just dont be tempted put too much in the paint will become very brittle if you dont stick to the correct amount

do you get water through your lines?

No, I always drain it down every time after using it.
A little water vapour does come out of the actual tank when draining it, but not very much.
I have never had any water in the Water Trap on the Regulator so I guess that the air is quite dry.
I also use the compressor with my CNC Plasma Cutter.
These are quite choosy about clean air, and I have never had any problems with that.....Touch Wood

I bought the Air Fed Mask to also use with my Sand Blaster Cabinet Setup so I need to sort out the extra Filter Setup
The Ebay one above says that it works with all their Air Fed Masks that they sell
I will have to contact them to see if it would work OK with the 3M Mask that I have bought.

With all the Pros and Cons of Cellulose and 2 Pack, I think that 2 Pack will be the best one for me to try

I just tried my hand at spraying ,first real attempt , used cheap cellulose from nearby paint supplier £20 for 2 litres,went on very easy ,my lad is really chuffed with result ,went with cell because don't have air fed mask

Have sprayed the old celullose based paint but not the water based stuff.

waterbased is just that, instead of using thinners which have massive "voc" content it uses water as a thinning agent better for environment not the painter... usually de-mineralised water
in the automotive trade everything is waterbased now all the base coats i used were water based but we were still using 2k clear coat as they had not perfected a waterbased clear coat at the time, solvent based paints are still allowed to be used but in small quantities.
also we had uv clear coat this dried solid to polish in 3 minutes but was a pain to use. I now no longer work in automotive and work in specialised coatings molydisulphates, p.t.f.e and many others that i wont bore you with now 90% of these are all solvent based and cannot be replicated in water based.most of the stuff is sub sea or oil field or top secret

main thing about any waterbourne paint is that you get the water out of it, air movement is essential and a bit of heat helps.
to much heat it will skin over trapping water then never dries properly causing problems when you clear coat it..

celly is cheap as chips and id only use it if i was restoring a car that was originally coated in it for originality

2k solid colours i use these on vans or some of the cars that are painted in it vw do a few in solids still

if you want a metallic a flip a pearl you must use base coat then lacquer it
this method is whats most commonly used these days and looks the best of the three.

A good compunding over with the likes of G3 norm? Truth is you loose 5% of the shine if you compound it. But to most it doesnt really make a difference because there gun finish wasnt that good in the first place hence the need to compound it

Hi Norm,that was gun finish ,to be honest its not perfect but i will compound it if i can ever get it back off my 16yr old.needed to get it sorted quick as he just passed his cbt and was desperate to ride it,i would like to have another go at perfecting it and get a higher quality gun(cheapy sealey or draper £20 used),it wasn't too difficult to get a reasonable result but took me a while with filling priming and sanding,also getting some temp into garage and parts,worst part is the red dust all over my garage
