Hi - my first post, so nice to meet you all

I have some galvanised scoffolding posts that I plan to use at uprights for a canopy roof on the back of my house.

What is the best primer and paint to use on galvanised steel?

You'll need some T Wash (called loads of other things too, but the names escape me!) to clean / etch the galvanising then red oxide will do it.
Any decent decorating centre will do it, should be around £20 a gallon. Slap it on, leave til the galv turns black, then rinse off with water.

Yes - thanks. Just found some on the internet - about £25 for a 5 litre container. Shame I only need enough to do 4 poles

B&Q do a primer which they say is suitable for galvanised steel.

Also some etch primers may be OK

manners paint plasticoat .no need for fancy primers and can be coated strait from the galve plant no prep

We used to use T wash, but its just another process. Etch primers are fine, never had any issues.

there is a 2k wash primer available no isocyanates says good for galv comes complete with activator makes up to 2 litres no thinner needed
think i paid 14 quid for it

I'm now thinking of going to my local paint shop and getting some etch primer and a top coat.

Whow hold on a minute the stuff makes the galvanising black AND turns stainless steel in a mess? That stuff? Oh, covers bare steel with rust just breathing through your workshop? Well, it's illegal my friend and it smells very bad, too.
