Spraying bare metal

I have some metal sections to paint up.
I going to degrease the metal first.
Before I do a coat of paint, am I correct in saying i need to use some etch primer first ?

no not really,just regular primer.

Depends on the paint, finish and what environment the sections will be in.
e.g. Hammerite goes directly on metal, couple of coats good to go.
The paint primer will need a key. Etch primer provides this by eating into the surface of the metal.

id suggest you do use a etch primer ...bites onto the metal for a better chance of it all lasting etc

you can lash normal primer straight on . it wont bubble up or do anything strange but wont hold up to abuse so well

Etch primer is definatly the way to go, ive used normal primer on bare metal only to find a few months down the line the paint starts lifting then rusts!

Startin' on mine tomorrow. Some surface rust removal. Probably to bare metal but not completely. Primer recommendations anyone?

depends what your spraying,metal wise.
as your in the states,and not all paints are the same as we have here,look at ppg,dumont range.
oh and treat that surface rust first.

I have to agree with jaykay, I've only ever used etch on aluminium. bare steel, well keyed, and clean will take a standard primer, and provided the prep is correct will stay there.

I'd use etch and then epoxy primer.

I use ICI long life two part etch primer for all metals it really bonds to the metal & prevents rust, you can't scrape it off with your thumbnail next day like you can with other paints, out of intrest, I was using it in the workshop a few years ago & inadvertantly blobbed a few drops on the side of my mug (tea mug that is, not my mug), so it's on a glazed surface with no preparation & it went through the dishwasher for months & months & never came off & anyone who has a dishwasher will know that ANY design eventually eventually de-glazes in the dishwasher!!

il second that just bought 2ltr from ruffoth autojumble 20 quid i use nothing but for priming it can be handpainted on as well

how much is the ICI etch normally?

just got some bog standard "pro spray" 2k etch for 16 quid(2 ltrs) should be ok though.

i allways use acid etch on everything metal even if ive sandblasted 1st .why use crap primer thats as porous as hell and chips off easily rust spots dont creep underneath so quick

get a good brand follow spec sheet and you'll be fine.
how did henry ford survive with out etch primer???

it used to be brown brothers,not sure now.
most paint suppliers should be able to point you in the right direction.
