Spot welder voltage?

I have a Crypton Triangle Monoflex spot welder, just like new, but I can't figure out the input voltage: the data plate says 1 phase, 50 cycles, 380 - 440V, fuse for 30A. I'm confused, is this a single phase machine? I suspect so, but can't find any information about it - can anybody help?

Hello Robert, that's what I thought but the stated voltage (380 - 440V) doesn't tie up with our single phase supply here in the UK, which is nominally 240V; 380 - 440V would normally be 3 phase over here, hence the confusion!

It is a single-phase machine. That is; there are only 2 power wires. The "single-phase" designation only refers to the # of supply phases, not the voltage.

Now, if you had a 400V single-phase supply, it would work fine. As the only 400V supply in your is 3-phase, then it will use one phase of the supply.

it is confusing but you do connect it to a three phase supply (415v) using any two of the three phases. This is common with larger sized welding machines.
