can someone explain the benifits of one of the these or how they help , incase you dont know what i mean MM sell them and the look like a normal one but with two stick out bits at the end !!!!!
I always look at them with doubts as you will damage the swan neck if you push down on too thick a section. Get some decent clamps and pull the pieces together with them.
As above, they are used to apply pressure to the top plate for the plug welding method, to ensure that the two plates are actually touching. as already said do not push too hard or you will damage the torch.I have used one a couple of times, Home made by slitting down a short length of copper pipe, castellating the end and attaching with a small hose clamp.
The castellations also alow the gas to flow out when the shroud is in contact with the workpiece. Further with the shroud touching the workpiece you should get consistant results.
I got one thrown in with my Clarke welder 16 years ago. I've never tried it!
According to the instructions: you clamp the parts together, set the wire feed to 7 or more and use a high power setting. The result is supposed to be that the pool forms and the wire pushes the pool from the top piece into the bottom piece.
All I can say is that it sounds like it might work!, but plug welding does work!
