Splitting maul reprofiled.

I have been cutting a tree down in the back garden gradually and the other day I took a trunk down which left me with some thick pieces of log. I decided to split some before I put it on the pile and about three whacks into the second piece I broke a 1" chunk out of the maul edge, must have been faulty as it's not had a hard life. I got the grinder out and cut the end straight but it looked odd with a bit of a flare so I squared it up and then sharpened it with not much taper to make it stronger. I tried it out thinking it would probably be scrap and was pleased to see it now works ten times better than it did and no longer gets stuck. I used to have to get a hammer to release it but now a kick with the boot and out it comes. It's not really home made but it is modified for the better. I didn't get a picture when it broke because i was a bit peed off It used to look like this

It's done a sterling job already, took another leg of the tree down and the bottom was a two cut process for the 14" bar. It's cut a few barrows of logs as well ready for next years fire, I'm happy with it (understatement)

May just be the pics but it looked like the cutting edge wasnt straight/perpendicular to the head.

splitting mauls need a wide angle to work properly, most are sharpened as axes & really do not work well for splitting so not surprised it was crap

It's a splitting maul not a precision instrument You whack it down hard into lumps of wood to make them into smaller lumps of wood. The angle it's at now is pretty good for what it does, here's a top view.

really could not tell you, but it needs to be wide enough to split rather than cut its way in.... pic above looks OK

its also a blunt instrument not a cutting tool

I nearly always cut my logs into 3' lengths and then split them and stack them upright. I rarely swing my maul I usually hold it in my left hand and use a 6lb sledge in my right. I'm fairly sure this is how they are designed to be used which is why they have the straight handle.
