I have been cutting a tree down in the back garden gradually and the other day I took a trunk down which left me with some thick pieces of log. I decided to split some before I put it on the pile and about three whacks into the second piece I broke a 1" chunk out of the maul edge, must have been faulty as it's not had a hard life. I got the grinder out and cut the end straight but it looked odd with a bit of a flare so I squared it up and then sharpened it with not much taper to make it stronger. I tried it out thinking it would probably be scrap and was pleased to see it now works ten times better than it did and no longer gets stuck. I used to have to get a hammer to release it but now a kick with the boot and out it comes. It's not really home made but it is modified for the better. I didn't get a picture when it broke because i was a bit peed off

You whack it down hard into lumps of wood to make them into smaller lumps of wood. The angle it's at now is pretty good for what it does, here's a top view.
