I'm planning to tidy the MGA up a bit on a rolling restoration basis before it gets painted. It has aluminium skins on all the closures which are wrapped over steel frames. I'm going to guess the edge of the steel frame has rusted a bit over the last 65 years and has caused the aluminium skin to split at the edge.
You can get new skins but they are expensive and are unlikely to fit very well. Has anyone repaired splits like this?
There's no harm in me cutting back the existing skin past the steel frame, cleaning up and painting the steel, then TIG welding in a new edge and wrapping it back around. Can't see that not working but if it doesn't I can always buy a new skin. Has anyone done this sort of repair before? The MG people don't seem to have done it.
