Splatting even with full gas

Hi, im new to posting on this forum but have looked around it in the past and looks a good place!

Anyway, i have a Clarke-Weld MIG welder 135t!

I have a big bas bottle, which is full, the correct regulator and everything all connected.

I never used to have a problem at all with it, used to be great!

Anyhow, im getting splatter 80% of the time constantly. Its doing my head in!

Gas is flowing ok, can hear it coming out of the torch... Earth is good.

Its C02 (Green label)... Its a 4ft bottle.

Also, its not so much "Splatting", its putting the weld down but is leaving the bubble looking marks in the weld (as if there is no gas). Its not laying the weld properly either and is very in-consistant.

Could you post a photo of one of the welds? Difficult to rule out a million different things otherwise.

Is the CO2 definitely pure CO2 and not a CO2/Nitrogen mix, and are you welding in an area where there might be a breeze?

Hi malcolm, thanks for the reply!

Its pure CO2, ill get some pics soon to try and help but you know when the gas runs out, and it leave little holes in the blob of weld.. Its doing that!

Could a bad earth cause splattering?

Normally means not enough gas flow OR something pushing the gas away.

It happens when you weld a seam in car body work no matter how clean it is - rust and sealant in the seam bubbles up and pushes away the gas. Wind, paint, oil, rust, any sort of contamination can do it. Can't see bubbles being the earth, though inconsistency can be (they are rubbish earth clamps on the Clarkes)

Thanks again! I did notice the earth clamp was shoddy.. im guessing it would be easy to attatch a better earth clamp to the earth cable.

I will have an experiment and get some pics later on this week
