Spectroscopic samples

A customer had these kicking about in the boot of his car, he got them in a unit clearance gave them to us to put in the bin.


What are they, how are they used?

I'm guessing some kind of sample to calibrate some kind of machine, or use as a comparison to define the type of materials being looked at....

They all seem to have the 2 burn marks.

They are used to calibrate a spectrometer
a machine that can analyse metals so you know the composition ie Chromium content etc.

These samples are of known composition. The old way is the best way so they have been analysed by chemical reaction by a number of different labs and the results averaged.

They are then put in this machine that sparks a current (hence the burns) and this produces a flash of light.......a spectrum. A sensor picks up this flash of light and determines how much blue there is etc etc. Each different element emits a different colour so from the spectrum you can determine the % Cr, %Ni, %Cu etc etc

You cant do Carbon and Sulphur and Phos and gases such as N, O because they arent metals

So i would take a guess as per everything Engineering/ scientificy looking in pretty box, that they are probably a standard, checked and tested of a known quantity used to check other things that need to be checked for what ever it is they check
