The RCD issue is irrelevant as the installation if for use and under control of a NORMAL i.e. not electrical competent person so needs to be RCD protected irrelevant of the installation methods mentioned above

Fair play the workshop will need to be protected, just checked the regs, I thought it was socket outlets above 13A that didn't have to be protected but just read it's 20A so the 16As would need RCD protection.

Surely the circuit from the CU 40A is classed as a distribution circuit and thus if the cable meets the correct installation methods for not needing an RCD then it wouldn't need one.

Don't forget that as there has been mention of stables etc then it's Probily a farm type installation so there is further RCD requirements

wow this is getting really confusing. i was planing on buying all the bits needed and running the cable where from point a to point b putting the sockets where i wanted them and paying an electrician to come and connect it all up. the stables are a separate building to my workshop but both are fed by the same panel.

Yes, hadn't thought of that, could be a TT installation.

The best thing to do would be to get the electrician to check it out first as there are so many variables involved, as mentioned above, also a lot of electricians are reluctant to just connect up wiring a client has installed themselves as the electrician then becomes responsible for the wiring installed by the customer and it is often impossible to see the full installation done by the client.

The last thing you want to do is buy however many meters of the wrong armoured cable, install it to have a spark tell you it's wrong and needs to come out!

the 40A goes to a big box with a load of switches that used to control the heaters.
