Sourcing 17-4PH Stainless Steel?

Strange one here:

Got a project upcoming that will need me to work with and then heat treat some 17-4PH stainless. Never worked with the stuff before but apparently it’s somewhat similar to 400 grade which I’ve worked with a fair bit.

Does anyone know of a decent place to source 17-4ph stainless steel? My usual supplier doesn’t carry it and the other supplier I use on occasion wants me to order a minimum of £500 worth of the stuff to make it “worth their while” per a phone call earlier today which is way more than is reasonable for this particular project (particularly given I doubt I’ll be using it for any other upcoming projects).

Any reputable supplier recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Tread carefully.

I was involved in finish machining some 17-4 PH parts a couple of years ago. It was a PITA to source, and we ended up with one bar that we had to get every part out of, or there was a lengthy delay and hefty MOQ for more. (I wasn't directly involved in sourcing it, so don't know where it came from, sorry.)

It was also a PITA to machine - needs good inserts.

No real help, sorry - just a 'gypsy's warning'.

Yeah I know it’s a PITA all round.

Had the joys of machining a long tube with some notches in it a few years ago on a friend’s behalf. Safe to say he wasn’t much of a friend after that

When I asked him where he got his from he says he can’t remember (it was longer ago than I thought it was though)

Not planning on it but has anyone welded it? I’ve welded 400 series before and that wasn’t great so just kind of curious

I've got some in round bar if your just after an odd bit for a home job

Aalco do it but probably have a minimum order on it as well.
Or there are quite a few aerospace suppliers who will have it but they will charge so many £££ the minimum orders will work out cheaper...

It welds fine. Same as 304 etc. Obviously needs heat treat after.

As above, what material and quantity do you need?

Are there other, equivalent designation for 17-4? I think 17-4 is a US spec. so there may be a European number by which it is also known, and which could find a supplier.

Speed Alloys, Hertford, I have used them quite a few times for marine grade stainless stuff & they are a good bunch to deal with.

17-4 stainless is precipitation hardening stainless steel and now it isn't four in the morning and the old brain cells are warmed up I can tell you that AMB Stainless and non ferrous in Sheffield will be able to supply you, I have some bits of heavy plate if you just want a bit to try, drop me a note if you do. You need a very rigid setup and carbide tooling but other than that it is great to work with, superb finish and very stable. The aging process is easy and to be honest I wish I had got some bar when I had the chance.
