Source of big cable drums

Does anyone have any idea where I could pick up a few large cable or pipe drums? The type that pipe or cable would be wound around so the drum could turn as the cable/pipe is pulled off and laid? I want to make three or four tables for outside summer use and some sturdy ones would be perfect.

Ebay has some, but a lot of sellers are asking silly amounts and the cheaper ones are too far away.

If anyone has any in east Cornwall between Dartmoor and Bodmin I would be pretty interested!

They are often on facebook this end of the country so probably will be down south and tidy ones go anywhere from £10 to £50 each for the large clean ones.

They look nice sanded, with a few steel ornamental infills and perhaps a central light of some sort.

It's best to advertise for one but ask for replys by pm, it stops others seeing one is for sale and gazumping you.

In Bodmin there is a western power distribution compound. You could ask some lads there.

I used to work for a company making cable, some of the drums they used were taller than me, all were owned by the company and clearly marked with their name.
They had a dedicated system to keep track of their drums as the large ones were very expensive to replace.
You might get lucky and find a supplier with some surplus / obsolete / damaged drums but don't build your hopes up.
Maybe try salvage yards, or just google "large cable drum for sale" and see what you find (I see some at £15/£30 but depends where you are).

most have deposits on them and get returned. you may get lucky and someone's borrowed one that was left lying around

Had a few emails recently with a gentle reminder the supply company still own them, they will send a collection now, even for the crappy ply ones let alone the 6+ footers. Must be getting even more expensive to buy.
Still the main contractors on most sites just want them gone and couldn’t give a damn the subby can’t take them and is waiting collection.

Hi, As said I always understood the were used on a 'surcharge' or 'rental' basis the same as Blue and Red pallets and placed back in the system and shouldn't just be appropriated.
