Sorting nuts and bolts

I get these for free from the guy who has the corner shop size approx. 7x7"x3he usually throws them in the bin. might pay you to ask if theres any spare at your local corner shop.

I thought was the whole idea! It's the very devil if you stand on a bit in the dark in your bare feet while heading for the toilet.....

I used to get the deep ice-cream tubs from a shop - strong, deep and with lids, I still have a couple left. But they stopped selling the stuff - no consideration, some folk!

Bins in pigeon holes are good , you can sub divide the drawers for smaller bolts/nuts . These units stand off the wall less than 9" and come up cheap secondhand. Also useful being able to take the bin to the job and not just grab handfuls and sort them out putting the unused stuff back.

Round at the bike shop there's a set of drawers with parts in and labels on the front. A couple of the drawers are for miscellaneous parts but there's not room to write that so it got assorted abbreviated, so two of the drawers now have "ass rubbers" and "ass grommets" on the front.

Never seen these for sale new or second hand....they look awesome.

What are they called.?

These are the Ikea ones i use http://www.ikea.com/gb/en/products/...er-set-of-17-transparent-orange-art-80251551/ good for letting people take home aswell as they never bring the nice containers back.....
And a few cleaned up bricks ready for the garage, I got offered £1 each for 60 bricks by a guy walking passed the house..

screwfix do nice sets of nuts, bolts, washers and other fastners with lift out containers that fit well into draws making storing/separating them easier

i too like having all the gear sorted into containers according to type.
there used to be a time i had everything in an old roses tin but trying to find matching items quickly became time consuming and irritating.
i totally agree with magnet that this is something not many people take the time to do and ive even been told " theyre cheap enough, why store stuff when if i need them i can just go buy some!".
it amazes me how much good stock ends up in the bin because of it.

Looking good......... what do you use to clean them? I,d be interested to see how your build progresses it would make a great thread in its own right

I use a few things to clean them up, I have a brick cleaning hammer scutch thing, axe, chisel and a wire brush, Some times i use the angle grinder with a diamond blade to go round the edge and then change to the knotted wire brush, I put on my safety goggles and i put in my head phones then my ear defenders and time flies with a few hours of 80's music..i have plenty of pics so maybe a build thread would be good.

i bought some storage drawers from aldi last year, i forgot what they cost but they wernt very much and are ideal for diy use.

I keep nuts & bolts from anything I strip & over the years have gathered up a large collection of fasteners so I rarely have to buy new bolts. I keep mine in organiser boxes from b&m & lidl. They had got into a mess & over the past few days I have been sorting them out.

These are the old b&m boxes. Cheap at £2.49 but you can't remove the dividers.

These b&m boxes are slightly larger with moveable dividers & a better latch but are £3.99. A problem on these boxes is if the divider comes out afterwards, mixing up your nuts & washers that you've just sorted out!

A dab of glue from a hot glue gun on the corners is enough to keep them in place.

These boxes from lidl are very good with more divisions.

I made this shelving unit to store my boxes but it's too small. I have a larger mobile unit planned as soon as I have a working table saw!
