Something to weld off

Hey,

Im just wondering if something like this would be okay to weld off? Would put some wood over it to give me more surface to weld off.

Need it for learning how to weld and for small fabrication jobs

As long as you're not putting too much heat into it (or the surface will singe/burn) I'd say it will be OK for MIG and TIG (though less than ideal).

For gas or Arc, I'd say you really do need a proper metal table.

I use one sometimes, a peice of 4/5mm plate with a bit of 25mm box stitched to the back that can be clamped up between the jaws.
Okay for the odd job.

I bought a cheap one (£7.50) from B&Q, just put a couple of slates on the top before welding. Can't go much wrong for that price

For the price, those things are remarkably handy; I bought one, removed the 2 wooden strips and the clamping mechanism which left me with a foldable set of legs. I fixed my dovetailing jig directly to it. It's still foldable and compact, and hangs on the wall.

Maybe do the same for a small welding bench - remove the wood & clamps, bolt a sheet of steel in their place; nothing inflammable remaining, just a handy, stable and foldable welding bench. Cheap & portable.
