metal lathe | eBay

<body>G.Karger metal lathe. I have owned this lathe for sometime i purchased it from a retired engineer who told me that it was of tool room standard as can seen in the pictures it is in reasonable condition.The lathe as variable power fees but no screw cutting...

Looks like a really nice toolroom lathe.
No screw cutting gearbox but as a 2nd lathe for someone that wouldn't matter.
£200 so far and not much interest in it.

Jesus...I still have space in the workshop marked "lathe" that was very nearly filled my a m400 last week. Now if I can just get some tight customers to settle their bills....

That's a toolroom lathe. I'd think it can cut some threads. It looks to have a leadscrew and a feedecrew.

The lead screw should occupy ta position just under the rack. It's not there.

You can see where someone has removed the leadscrew and the halfnut lever on the saddle, and blanked them. Looks factory though, like it was removed/blanked at customer request...

Out of interest, had a look at their entry on the Lathes UK site. Impressive company in their time with a massive works. Quality lathe but this one has obviously been robbed of its chucks but at least they have had the good sense to leave the backplates. If the plain bearings in the head have been well lubricated and not too much wear on the bed etc. then would make a good lathe for turning pins etc but not a particularly large swing for such a beast. As Fizzy says, ideal for £200 if you've got another lathe also and perhaps a few spare chucks.

There lies the problem with buying from fleabay and the like if you are not near enough to go and check out your prospective purchase. Could well be that the bidders on this lathe did and £360 was its actual worth. There's no way to judge the wear from photo's unless there is obvious grooves to the bed etc and what one man describes as gold might be a turd. I gave up looking for my Harrison on auction sites as clearly my idea of good condition and the sellers were often far apart. Annoying when you go and look before bidding, especially as frequently not on your doorstep. Did find my M300 in the end via a gentleman selling-up his workshop not half a mile away from me. Downside was that I also bought an Elliot mill, two large pillar drills and a host of other equipment that weren't on my shopping list but can't resist good tools when they are so near. Probably need to go and see the same therapist as you Fizzy! perhaps we could get a Forum discount with them.

Well my Smart and Brown was my first "bad" purchase on Ebay out of far too many!
I put bad in inverted commas because, apart from the home made gap the lathe is actually very good with almost zero wear.

so bad can be made excellent with some work by the sound of it , so still a victory ,any lathe with minimal wear is a winner
