some pics of some practice pieces for upcoming exam

Had a session a college today practicing for some exams thats coming up. see what you guys a gals think.

the first is a T joint with root and cap. first run was with a 2.5 electrode then caped with a 3.2.

second pics is another T joint on 3 ml plate single pass with a 2.5ml electrode.

3rd pic is a open corner joint done with a 2.5 ml electrode

Personally I would be looking for what looks like 6mm T-fillet, root 2.5, two stringer caps with either, again 2.5 or 3.2. I would reckon single weave cap with 3.2 would be outwith normal weld spec?

3mm T looks fine, maybe up the amps a tad and, keep a tight arc.

Open Corner: I'd be looking for first of all, two pieces tacked at 90 degree. Then single pass with a 12.........sorry 2.5. The angle in the pic does not do you any favours from a quality point of view.

i would agree with runnach

do a 2 run cap insted of trying to cover it in one, unless you are doing vertical up.

and i would advice you find a power brush (these are a god send for cleaning welds)

yea the pics are naff, done on my phone. the inverters at college are verry nice, need to upgrade here at home. thanks for your input

Input/crit was on weld quality, not pic quality and, I thought welds were nailed at college...........no?

All of the welds in the pics look a little cold, up the current slightly, concentrate more on keeping your travel speed consistent, which will in turn keep the bead width consistent. On a multi pass fillet it is going to be very difficult to leave a decent flat profile by capping over a root with a single pass, once the root is in, you should then cap with two split beads, this will leave a much flatter weld profile, as Toddy said this does not necessarily apply to a vertical fillet. To aid with bead consistency, look at the shape of the weld pool behind the rod, it will look slightly pear shaped, as you increase the travel speed the pool will become narrower and longer, reducing travel speed will make the pool wider and shorter, try to get it consistent. Practice will refine your welding, good luck with the exam!
