Hi guys and gals, I've got a couple of questions I'm hoping some of the experienced welders can help me with.
Warping; to seam or not to seam.
I'm talking about car body work here so fairly thin metals. So far from my limited experience I've never dared try and seam things for fear of too much heat warping the panel. The car that I've been working on is an old e36 BMW and the thinnest metal I've found on external skins is about 1.2mm or so, so I could get a seam going without blowing holes, it's just I choose not to. Instead I build up tacks while pausing every little while.
Obviously if it's soo thin that blowing holes is an issue then the thin metal technique should be used and therefore no chance of a continuous seam, but what about when it's that little bit thicker? Experience of warping? Any general rules you guys follow?
Edit: Also wire diameters. I've been using 0.6 but what thickness is that good for? and when to switch to 0.8? I've spend the last 15 minutes searching for this and cannot for the life of me find a thread I remember seeing on this topic before.
Thanks
