Solid Rubber Rod

i am looking to make some bar ends for a motorbike proj ct. I need some rubber rod that is 8mm internal and 22mm ish external diameter that I can put a bolt through with a washer and nut on the end so that is it tightens it draws the nut up and expands the rubber inside the end of the handlebar and keeps it in place.

Any suggetstions?

I think you will struggle to find this ready made but you could buy this and drill it out. Or you could cast it from some room temperature vulcanising (rtv) silicone rubber

Couldn't you do it the way bicycle steering stems used to be retained: a pair of alloy solid cylinders with one face of each cut at 45 degrees, one bored through and one threaded so as you tighten them together the angled faces force them offset from each other...?

That's not a bad idea, how do I cut the angles so they offset?

If you need the rod longer? just glue the bungs together

You would drill out an aluminium block, tap the bottom of the hole and the angle wouldn't matter too much soyou could freehand it with a grinder or make a template to wrap round it with.

Bolt in bar end plugs for bicycles typically use the expander style and straight/upright (as in not drop/road racing) bars are 22.2mm OD at the grips, wall thickness varies some as there's ultra thin wall Ti or heavy duty ally etc. Plastic/rubber push in bar ends cost about 50p a pair, under a fiver for ally bolt in

Why not use a alloy with slots in it and a steel expander a la rawlbolt style, it'll be heavier, the more density you can get into them the better.
The oem bar ends are there to damp the ends of the bars from vibration and improve the handling, which is why theyre usually made from steel.

I am making the bar ends from stainless but its a method of holding them in place that I really need. The wedge idea is looking the most promising at the moment.

Do I need to make the wedge bit smaller than the main body or bigger or the same!?

Well I made up the weights. maker very kindly provided me with drawing above for the wedge fitting which I made up and they worked OK but took ages just to make one! So I went with one of the earlier suggestions instead.......
