I don't know if they still do it but I got a 4.5" and a 9" Hitachi grinder for £100 in a combo deal. I've only used the big one to cut a piece of train track and a few paving slabs but it seems a good bit of kit. It tripped the 16 amp "B" circuit breaker thoughDepends how much you use it tbh...
Hitachi do a decent 9" for £99.99 on Screwfix (though it has 3 stars the person had said its better than any other 9" grinder he's had?!?!?! Obv not bothered to click the star ratings accordingly)

That would make it worthwhile but I doubt any new one, soft start or not, will last like his 20 year old Makita didsoft start would make the armature and field coils last longer as they wouldnt be getting full load amps on start up
