Soda blasting car shell cost?

Afternoon, I was thinking of getting my Volvo Amazon Estate shell soda blasted and epoxy primed. I'm nearly at the stage where all the main rust areas that I know of have been fixed and I want to strip the whole car and make sure there are no rust issues missed. I was thinking £500 to 600 but the local company said £1100 to 1350 would be the cost. Is that on par to what it normally costs? Limited options up here.

with your shed get some plastic clear sheet over floor and up to your ceiling as it can seal up there with some rubber and some latts

have the car in its turntable i know you have

and sand blast it from outside of the plastic sheet

stop collect all the sand for reuse turn the car and continue

The drawback with any sort of blasting is that the media tends only to go in straight lines so it won't remove any rust or paint from anywhere that's hidden like inside chassis rails and the like.

Not really a problem as I've had the floor off etc.. I'd worry about not getting paint back into all the areas I think after chemical dipping. Probably good to do before doing all the metal work but I'm coming to an end.

I’m getting my Morris Minor soda blasted and the cost is £1000. So probably about right for the Volvo. I was a bit shocked at it also but a pal who knows said it was quite reasonable.

sodas not reusable its a one shot . takes a lot of soda to do as its hardly abrasive. kiln dried sand or supafine grit would be cheaper and ideal on a shell but no use whatsoever on panels and would ruin them ive done it thats why theres such a cost

I was all set to get some doors and bonnet/hatch lid dipped by them but then got put off by someone who’s opinion I trust that said one he had done (or had done) was a real problem for a while afterwards chasing where left over (acid?) was leaching out into the paintwork. He recommended against it ... but I haven’t done any alternative yet ! It’s a shame as the end result is pretty much like buying a new panel off the shelf.

To be honest £1200-£1350 sounds about right for something the size of an Amazon. The last Mini I had done with crushed glass was £700.

Price wise it’s bang on

I haven't done it yet but have a bonnet and tailgate from my GT6 waiting to go and then (new) Mini shell if all went well. I'll do a little more homework.

Thanks guys. Will need to have a think what route I go down. I could do it myself but the idea was to get someone to do it for me so I didn’t have to and I could push along the project faster.

if you did decide to do it yourself

you should be able to place it outside the kitchen door and beable to turn it

also that area has a good movement area for you to move in

for the seal you could use this stuck to the latts the latts you screw to the ceiling

I was quoted around £1000 (acsodablasting) but no doubt the price would go up in reality as they hit difficult areas, the quote was on the basis of there being no problems. It's probably worth it as stripping my jeep myself took me many many days using knotted brush to remove the stonechip, then paint stripper to remove paint and media to remove rust areas.

I'm weary of e-coating. I've used hot caustic soda and acid to strip suspension parts and thats what they do prior to e-coating. It doesn't work well, caustic soda loosens material but you still need elbow grease to get it off. At the e-coating plant they do this with a pressure washer but that won't work in cavities. Removing rust with acid dips is equally bad, the deep rust takes ages to remove and in the mean time the acid is damaging the good metal. You end up with deep rust still not removed and your good metal in a worse state. I now use a combination of electrolytic rust removal as that removes the deep rust better and then acid dip to remove the smut and any remaining rust.

Google the e-coating, you will see theres some bad reviews, lost parts, vehicles returning damaged, seals failing due to the acid getting stuck in them..
